General information

 Persina Nature Park was designated with Ordinance № РД - 684 from 04.12.2000 of the Minister of Environment and Water of Bulgaria and is one of the youngest natural parks in Bulgaria. It is situated on the territory of three Danube municipalities - Nikopol, Belene and Svishtov and it is covering 21 762, 2 ha. The direction of the park is in Belene - small, beautiful town on the Danube River.
 Persina Natural Park is unique for Bulgaria and it is the only one on the Bulgarian river valley of Danube. Its designated aims to conserve and restore the wetlands near Danube river. Special attention is paid to the numerous islands and their natural status. There are two island groups - in Nikopol consist of 4 islands and in Belene - Belene Island Complex consists of 19 islands 5 of which Rumanian. Along the whole length Belene Island Complex is 18 km. Here is located the biggest Bulgarian and the fourth in Europe Danube island - Persina which gave its name to the Nature Park. Its length is 15 km and in width reaches 6 km.
 The uniqueness and great importance of this island group is the reason on 24.09.2002 to be proclaimed for a Ramsar site - the biggest one in Bulgaria - 6898 ha. The most significant ecosystems within the Park are the flooded forests along the Danube and the inland marshes. For protection of these habitats several protected areas are designated.
