For the last half century, Bulgaria lost more than 90% of the wetlands around the Danube, which were providing the livelihood of local populations. The draining of the marshes was a means to combat malaria and provision of agricultural areas. Today the importance of wetlands has been reconsidered and the Bulgarian government adopted a policy of conservation the wetland habitats Based on past experience it is clear that the protection of wetlands is not enough contrivance for their preservation. To restore the biodiversity in the degraded habitats are necessary actions to restore wetlands to their optimal status. With this purpose the Ministry of Environment and Water applied for project to the World Bank.
The project was approved and for pilot sites for wetland restoration were selected Eastern part of the Persina Island - the territory of Persina Nature Park and the marshes Kalimok / Brushlen next to Tutrakan. The project consists of three components: Component A: Restoration of wetlands, including preparation of detailed project, execution of works and supervision. Component B: Management of Protected Areas, incl. management planning of the protected areas, enhancing capacities of institutions involved in managing natural resources in protected areas. Component C: Management, coordination and monitoring of the project.
